Shoulder Scaption

Shoulder Scaption is a gentle strengthening exercise that helps improve shoulder stability, rotator cuff strength, and functional movement. Performed in the scapular plane (approximately 30–45° forward from your side), this exercise places less stress on the shoulder joint while promoting healthy movement patterns.

Equipment Needed

  • None (progress to a light dumbbell when appropriate)

Starting Position

  • Stand with good posture.

  • Keep your shoulders relaxed.

  • Let your arms rest by your sides.

  • Turn your thumbs so they point upward.

Step 1

Raise your arm approximately 30–45 degrees forward from your side (the scapular plane).

Step 2

Continue lifting until your arm reaches approximately shoulder height, or as high as you can comfortably without increasing pain.

Step 3

Slowly lower your arm back to the starting position using a controlled movement.

Repeat as recommended.

Recommended Repetitions

  • 10–15 repetitions

  • 1–3 sets

  • Perform once daily or as directed by your healthcare provider

Tips

  • Keep your thumb pointing upward throughout the movement.

  • Move slowly and with control.

  • Maintain good posture.

  • Stay within a comfortable range of motion.

  • Breathe normally.

Common Mistakes

  • Lifting directly out to the side instead of slightly forward.

  • Shrugging the shoulders.

  • Swinging the arm.

  • Using momentum.

  • Raising the arm higher than comfortable.

Stop the Exercise If

  • You experience sharp pain.

  • Your symptoms worsen.

  • You develop numbness or tingling.

  • Your healthcare provider advises you to stop.
