Relaxation, Therapeutic or Deep Tissue Massage: Which Is Right for You?

Choosing a massage doesn’t have to be complicated. You may know that you want a massage, but not necessarily know whether relaxation, therapeutic, or deep tissue massage is the best fit.

The good news? You don’t have to figure it all out before your appointment. Your Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) will discuss how you’re feeling, your pressure preferences, and what you would like to get out of your session prior to treatment.

Relaxation Massage Therapy

Sometimes the goal really is just to slow down and unwind. Relaxation Massage Therapy typically uses gentle to moderate pressure with smooth, flowing techniques. The focus is on creating a soothing experience while addressing general muscle tension.

It may be a good choice if you:

  • Prefer lighter or moderate pressure

  • Feel generally tense or stressed

  • Want a soothing, comforting treatment

  • Have mild muscle tightness or stiffness

  • Simply need time to rest and recharge

Therapeutic Massage Therapy

Therapeutic Massage Therapy offers a customized approach. Your RMT may combine relaxing techniques with targeted work depending on what your body needs. One area may require firmer pressure, while another may benefit from a lighter approach.

It may be a good choice if you:

  • Have specific areas of muscle tension or physical discomfort

  • Want a blend of relaxation and targeted focus

  • Experience everyday neck, shoulder, or back tightness

  • Prefer varying amounts of pressure across different areas

  • Want your treatment adapted to your goals that day

Deep Tissue Massage Therapy

If you prefer firmer pressure and a more focused approach, Deep Tissue Massage Therapy may be a great fit. Deep tissue techniques use slower, deliberate pressure to address deeper layers of muscle tissue and persistent areas of tightness. Treatment is always adapted to your comfort level—effective massage therapy should never be painfully intense.

It may be a good choice if you:

  • Prefer firm or deeper pressure

  • Have persistent areas of muscle tension or tightness

  • Experience recurring physical stiffness

  • Want focused attention on specific regions

  • Feel that lighter massage techniques don't match your pressure preferences

So, Which Massage Should You Book?

  • Relaxation Massage Therapy → I want to relax and ease general tension.

  • Therapeutic Massage Therapy → I want a customized massage combining relaxation with targeted work.

  • Deep Tissue Massage Therapy → I prefer firmer pressure focused on deeper muscle tightness.

If you are still unsure, that is completely fine. You can book a standard Massage Therapy appointment, and your RMT will review your health history, discuss your goals, and tailor the session to your needs.

Tailored to Your Goals

Whether you are looking for relaxation, targeted therapeutic care, or deeper pressure, all techniques are integrated into your personalized session. Your Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) will discuss your preferences during your assessment and adapt the treatment to what your body needs.
