Towel Internal Rotation Stretch

Towel Internal Rotation Stretch is a gentle mobility exercise designed to improve shoulder flexibility and internal rotation. Using a towel allows you to comfortably stretch the shoulder behind your back while controlling the amount of movement.

What Does This Exercise Help?

Equipment Needed

  • Bath towel

  • Hand towel

Starting Position

  • Stand upright with good posture.

  • Hold one end of a towel in your unaffected hand above your shoulder.

  • Reach behind your back with your affected arm and grasp the lower end of the towel.

  • Relax your shoulders.

Step 1

Gently pull upward with your unaffected hand, allowing the affected arm to move comfortably up your back.

Step 2

Stretch only until you feel a gentle pull in your shoulder.

Do not force the movement into pain.

Step 3

Hold the stretch for 5–10 seconds, then slowly return to the starting position.

Repeat using slow, controlled movements.

Recommended Repetitions

  • 10 repetitions

  • 1–3 sets

  • Perform once or twice daily, or as recommended by your healthcare provider.

Tips

  • Move slowly and with control.

  • Keep your shoulders relaxed.

  • Stand tall throughout the exercise.

  • Stay within a comfortable range.

  • Breathe normally.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaning forward.

  • Shrugging your shoulders.

  • Pulling too forcefully.

  • Holding your breath.

  • Stretching into pain.

Stop the Exercise If

  • You experience sharp or severe pain.

  • Your symptoms worsen.

  • You develop numbness or tingling.

  • Your healthcare provider advises you to stop.
