Stick-Assisted Abduction
Stick-Assisted Abduction is a gentle shoulder mobility exercise designed to improve side-to-side movement, reduce stiffness, and restore shoulder function. Using your unaffected arm to guide the movement allows you to safely increase your range of motion without placing excessive strain on the shoulder.

Improves shoulder abduction (lifting the arm out to the side)

Reduces stiffness
Helps restore everyday shoulder movement
Encourages gentle, controlled range of motion
Equipment Needed
Wooden stick
Cane
Broom handle
Starting Position
Stand upright with good posture.
Hold the stick with both hands.
Keep your affected arm beside your body.
Relax your shoulders.
Step 1
Use your unaffected arm to slowly guide your affected arm out to the side.
Step 2
Raise your arm only until you feel a gentle stretch. Keep your elbow straight and avoid shrugging your shoulder.
Step 3
Hold the stretch for 5–10 seconds, then slowly return to the starting position.
Repeat using slow, controlled movements.
Recommended Repetitions
10 repetitions
1–3 sets
Perform once or twice daily, or as recommended by your healthcare provider.
Tips
Move slowly and with control.
Keep your elbow straight throughout the movement.
Relax your shoulders.
Stay within a comfortable range of motion.
Breathe normally.
Common Mistakes
Shrugging your shoulder.
Bending your elbow.
Twisting your body.
Forcing the movement into pain.
Moving too quickly.
Stop the Exercise If
You experience sharp or severe pain.
Your symptoms worsen.
You develop numbness or tingling.
Your healthcare provider advises you to stop.
