Improve Shoulder Mobility & Reduce Shoulder Tightness

The Cross-Body Shoulder Stretch is a gentle stretching exercise designed to improve shoulder flexibility and reduce tightness in the back of the shoulder. It is commonly recommended for frozen shoulder, rotator cuff injuries, shoulder impingement, and general shoulder stiffness.

This stretch helps improve shoulder mobility while reducing tension in the muscles and soft tissues that support the shoulder joint.

Equipment Needed

  • No equipment required

Starting Position

  • Stand or sit with good posture.

  • Relax your shoulders.

  • Keep your neck in a comfortable position.

Step 1

Bring your affected arm across the front of your body at approximately shoulder height.

Step 2

Use your opposite hand to gently pull your arm closer toward your chest until you feel a comfortable stretch behind your shoulder.

Hold for 20–30 seconds.

Step 3

Slowly release the stretch and return to the starting position.

Repeat.

Recommended Repetitions

  • Hold for 20–30 seconds

  • Repeat 3–5 times

  • Perform once or twice daily, or as recommended by your healthcare provider.

Tips

✔ Keep your shoulders relaxed.

✔ Stretch gently without bouncing.

✔ Keep your back straight.

✔ Breathe normally throughout the stretch.

✔ Stretch only until you feel a comfortable pull.

Common Mistakes

✘ Pulling the arm too forcefully.

✘ Shrugging your shoulders.

✘ Twisting your body during the stretch.

✘ Holding your breath.

Stop the exercise and consult your healthcare provider if you experience:

  • Sharp or severe shoulder pain

  • Numbness or tingling

  • Pain that continues to increase after stretching
